Description
Do you teach 4th grade fractions? If you want your fraction unit to make teaching fractions more interactive, more engaging, more research-based and have a problem-solving focus, this set of fraction lessons may be just what you are looking for!
It is unlike any other fraction unit out there. I have created a set of fraction lessons and professional development rolled into one--and teaches for deep fraction understanding.
What is this unusual resource?
A few years ago, I traced my thinking and my students' work through a constructivist fractions unit. I had many, many requests for the unit and its resources—and this is it! It is a labor of love! It includes 16 "fraction investigations" that helped my students build their understanding of the fraction components of the Common Core and other rigorous math standards.
This unit stresses problem-solving, critiquing reasoning, explaining thinking, and an immersion in the Standards for Mathematical Practice. It is written off the fourth grade CCSS, but is easily adaptable for grades 3 and 5 and useful for any set of rigorous math standards. In fact, homeschooling families have found it invaluable for teaching small groups or even one child.
In fact, teachers tell me over and over that they love the professional development they get embedded right in the unit. Teaching fractions is not easy. This unit truly can help.

What are teachers saying about this resource?
"I couldn't say enough wonderful things about this product. You are one I can ALWAYS count on to provide thorough, engaging, rigorous, student-centered learning tasks that get the student immersed in and excited about learning. I LOVE the debates and all the communication the kids are doing throughout this unit. They really are formulating their own understanding of fractions and why/how we use them. This product gets a grade of infinity because it's beyond awesome. Thank you, thank you! My fractions unit has ROCKED."
"I love this product! It was amazing to "live in your classroom" as you guided the students through the learning. This is the epitome of Common Core: They were actually THINKING fractions! Your candid commentary was so helpful and it helped shape my thinking as I taught this material to my own students. This was far better than any of the math inservices I've attended--and I learned so much more...
"Just what I was looking for. I am new to fourth grade and have not taught fractions for a while and I have a number of students who came in unfamiliar with many of the beginning concepts. This work has allowed children to explore fractions, think and talk through what they are discovering, and develop a lasting understanding of essential fraction concepts."
