Description

Can your students solve problems in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane in order to recover stolen diamonds? Students will race through a train station following clues, plotting points, solving word problems, as they go undercover to recover the goods stolen in a diamond heist. This online breakout is based on 6th grade math standards. They'll need to be quick reflecting points across the x-axis, finding the distance a point lies from the y-axis, finding the distance between points, and plotting points in order to save the day. This is a Boom Cards™ activity, so there are no clues to hide and the entire breakout process is automated and self-checking!

To use Boom Cards™, you must be connected to the Internet. Boom Cards™ play on modern browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge). Apps are available for modern Android, iPads, iPhones, and Kindle Fires. For security and privacy, adults must have a Boom Learning account to use and assign Boom Cards. You will be able to assign the Boom Cards you are buying with “Fast Pins,” (a form of play that gives instant feedback to students for self-grading Boom Cards). For assignment options that report student progress back to you, you will need to purchase a premium account. If you are new to Boom Learning, you will be offered a free trial of our premium account. Escape rooms are a great way to increase student engagement, encourage collaborative learning, and build critical thinking skills. Digital breakouts are also perfect for distance learning! This number systems breakout can be used for enrichment or review. It can be completed in small groups, or even individually for early finishers or those needing extra practice on a concept before end-of-year testing. While this activity is designed using sixth grade common core standards, it can be used by advanced 5th graders or as a review for 7th grade.

In order to solve the puzzles in this digital breakout, students must be able to:

  • Plot points in all four quadrants of a coordinate plane
  • Determine the distance between points on a coordinate plane (with the same x coordinate or the same y coordinate)
  • Reflect points over the x or y axis
  • Know terms such as origin, axis, coordinate, reflection, etc.
  • Identify the four quadrants
  • Solve word problems involving all four quadrants of the coordinate plane
  • Name points in the coordinate plane
  • Read clues carefully to solve puzzles

What's included in the PDF?

FAQ

  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Most students will be able to complete this activity in under 45 minutes. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the puzzles very quickly (20-30 minutes), others will take longer.
  • Can this be used for remote learning? Yes! This product is designed to be able to be completed completely online and can be done in-person, for distance learning, or hybrid models. Students will need a modern device and internet connection.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Boom Deck™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand a rational number as a point on the number line. Extend number line diagrams and coordinate axes familiar from previous grades to represent points on the line and in the plane with negative number coordinates.
Understand signs of numbers in ordered pairs as indicating locations in quadrants of the coordinate plane; recognize that when two ordered pairs differ only by signs, the locations of the points are related by reflections across one or both axes.
Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.
Solve real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Include use of coordinates and absolute value to find distances between points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate.
