Description
This unit gives students an immersive, in-depth, and hands-on opportunity to apply the "real-world" learning they crave in the classroom.
This is an ELA-centric unit that has cross-curricular math elements as well. Students can explore the issues of low-, mid-, and high-SES profiles with the capability of delving into the complications of disparity of wealth, privilege, and restrictions to social mobility.
The profiles students will role-play are based off of real people and case studies, and the hardships the profiles encounter when trying to budget, apply for loans, pay expenses, and vote are based off of real-life restrictions.
This tangible, accessible, collaborative, an flexibly-designed unit comes with all of the materials you will need to make meaning with these five days of lessons, as well as suggestions and options for enriching the unit further.
Students and teachers alike have commented on how this unit was one of the most meaningful, memorable, and engaging things they did when it came to thinking both "big world" and "real world".
Additional "extended learning" projects and assignments are also suggested.
