Description

Practice and review integer exponent rules with this engaging digital escape room activity. Understanding the properties of exponents will help students extract an undercover agent. 8th grade math students, pre-algebra classes, and high schoolers will be challenged by this rigorous, differentiated laws of exponents activity.

Apply the laws of exponents to evaluate expressions to find a locker combination, match equivalent expressions to turn off the security cameras, find missing exponents, perform error analysis, and more to escape! This no prep, self-checking digital escape room comes with two difficulty options (please note that some puzzles and answers are the same between the two versions). Version A, the easier version, does not include negative exponents. Version B is more challenging and includes integer exponents, including challenging puzzles with negative exponents. This breakout can be completed by anyone with an internet connected device & browser. The entire escape process if automated by a Google Form™ (Google accounts are not required).

In order to complete the puzzles in this escape room, students should have a firm grasp of the properties of exponents (standard 8.EE.A.1)

  • Product Rule of Exponents
  • Quotient Rule of Exponents
  • Zero Exponent Rule
  • Identity Exponent Rule
  • Negative Exponent Rule (Version B only)
  • Power of a Product Rule
  • Power of a Quotient Rule
  • Analyze errors, simplify expressions, evaluate expressions with integer exponents, match equivalent expressions & more!

What's included in the PDF?

  • Detailed instructions & tips
  • One page that it is recommended to be printed for each group working on the breakout. This includes tools to help solve some of the puzzles. Please note that a Google Slides™ version of a coordinate plane to help students solve one puzzle is linked in the online breakout. This is an optional tool & can only be used by students with their own Google Drives. The paper version of the recording page has a coordinate plane for students to use.
  • URL to access the Google Form™.
  • Detailed answer key
  • Success signs to snap photos with after completing the activity (optional)
  • Optional link for Google Drive™ users to create a copy of the form to save to their own drives in order to view student results.

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout. *There is one optional link in the form that requires students to have a Google Slides. This is not required to complete the escape room.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Most students will be able to complete this activity in under 30 minutes. You can allow 45-60 minutes to be safe. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the puzzles very quickly (15 minutes), others will take longer.
  • Can this be used for remote learning? Yes! This product is designed to be able to be completed completely online and can be done in-person, for distance learning, or hybrid models. Students will need a device and internet connection.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.

Escape rooms are an excellent way to increase student engagement, encourage collaboration, and provide practice, review, and enrichment. This escape room is based on 8th grade math standards, however, it is a great review for algebra and high school math students.
