Description
I believe this to be the best lesson I have ever created! I hope you enjoy it, too.
It includes a slideshow to guide students through the 4 day simulation, 4 worksheets (1:1/Google compatible), a teacher instruction guide, and a printable map of the hypothetical island.
The simulation asks students, divided into life rafts, to crash land on an island and attempt to start a society from scratch. Who will govern? What will the rules be? How are they enforced? Who enforces them? How will students respond to stress from those they govern? Who wields social capital or power in such circumstances? How will they interact with other groups? Or hypothetical island natives? All these questions and many many more can be broached in this fun, manageable, and memorable class simulation. This activity is ideal for starting a semester or course on government, psychology, or sociology-- or finishing one. In my experience it is an incredibly memorable way to introduce students to the idea of power, governance, and one's relation to both.
Enjoy!
