What educators are saying

This was a fun project. My students enjoyed completing it. I think the 3-D aspect is more fun, however, we did 2-D drawings due to our lack of materials. It all worked out fine.
My students are just wrapping this project up and were talking about how much fun they had! They present on Friday and I am so excited to see how they go. Thanks for such an awesome resource, I love everything you have!

Description

This resource is part of the Atoms and the Periodic Table Bundle!

In this Chemical Element Advertisement Project, students are "hired" by an advertisement campaign to design a magazine ad or TV/online commercial to help boost sales for the elements on the Periodic Table. They have the option to design a convincing advertisement in the form of a magazine ad (small poster on cardboard the size of a cereal box) or a TV commercial (1 to 2 minute video clip on a flash drive or via Google Drive).

The students like having the choice of project, and they do a great job researching and getting creative!

The first part of the project is to complete the fact sheet, which requires them to use a minimum of three sources, which must be cited in MLA format. Four website suggestions are given in the directions for the project.

A rubric is provided that will allow you to set the point values for the various requirements as you wish.

The included list of elements will help ensure that as many elements are represented as possible so you will have great, unique classroom decor and a variety of fun videos to watch!

As a reflection activity for the students during the project presentations, I like them to pretend that they are the sales team executives who are making the choice about which advertisements to fund. Give the students a fictitious “fund” of say, 1 million dollars, and while they watch/view each other’s advertisements, ask them to try to assign monetary values to the various projects that they would invest in!

NGSSHS-PS1-1
Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms. Examples of properties that could be predicted from patterns could include reactivity of metals, types of bonds formed, numbers of bonds formed, and reactions with oxygen. Assessment is limited to main group elements. Assessment does not include quantitative understanding of ionization energy beyond relative trends.
NGSSMS-PS1-1
Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures. Emphasis is on developing models of molecules that vary in complexity. Examples of simple molecules could include ammonia and methanol. Examples of extended structures could include sodium chloride or diamonds. Examples of molecular-level models could include drawings, 3D ball and stick structures, or computer representations showing different molecules with different types of atoms. Assessment does not include valence electrons and bonding energy, discussing the ionic nature of subunits of complex structures, or a complete depiction of all individual atoms in a complex molecule or extended structure.
