    Description

Are you looking for engaging projects? This is a set of three challenges that all involve the earth! Students will be building earthquake-resistant structures, solar ovens, and water pipelines. Although these make excellent challenges for Earth Day, they may be used at any time of year! Best of all, your students will love all three of these!

Please note: This package contains three challenges. Each may be purchased separately.

    What are the challenges?

    STEM Solar Oven

Students will be using materials to design a box oven that will absorb and/or reflect sunlight and create enough heat inside the box to toast a food product. We decided s’mores would be a fun item to try! Students will test their ovens by trying different materials to determine which absorbs heat the best and then they will build the version they think will create the warmest oven. The final oven will be used to heat and toast a s’mores dessert.

    STEM Earthquake Resistant Building Challenge

In this challenge, students will be using materials to design a three-story structure that can withstand being shaken in a mild earthquake simulation. The “earth” pan you provide for the simulation uses an easy supply- gelatin - or you can construct a shake tray following the simple instructions included in the resource package.

Just prepare the shake tray and then let students add their structures to it. The structures are built using only three materials, must be at least three floors tall, resemble a building (not a tower), and be stable enough to keep standing. Will the buildings survive the mild earthquake?

    STEM Water Pipeline

Students will be using materials to design and build a gravity-powered water pipeline. They will transport water from the main tank to a smaller tank using an incline that will allow this movement. They must also carefully connect the pipes and make sure those connections are water-tight. Testing and plugging leaks will be part of the task. This is an easy prep challenge with simple supplies, but takes lots of trial and error and thinking! Students will also be intrigued by the scenario of building the pipeline which tackles a household chore- how to get water to your dogs!

Check the individual listing for each package for more information and more detailed previews. Also, all three challenges have a scoring rubric and all forms are editable!

This set is a combination of three STEM Challenges. If you prefer they may be purchased separately:
