Daily Digest: Article of the Day for Grades 3/4- Pack B

Article of the Day is a perfect way to get students reading, writing, using graphic organizers, and practicing the information you are teaching in class. This pack of articles and stories includes topics based on social studies, world communities, acceptance and empathy, which is SO needed in our world right now!

This bundle includes 20 days of articles and passages, 10 being non-ficiton and 10 being fictional narratives. This is PACK B, so if you haven't started with these, begin with Pack A!

Each page includes:

This pack is amazing for centers, as it is totally self-running and needs little guidance from the teacher. You could also use this as morning work or a daily homework page. Expect each page to take 15-25 minutes to complete.

The articles and passages included are EXTREMELY engaging for students and are sure to spark conversation! They also include information that will help you meet social studies standards through the study of world communities. Acceptance and empathy are also woven into each of the pieces.

Sample story:
For six weeks she prepared for the Veteran’s Day breakfast, and for six weeks Mezi worried about this day. She came in early because she offered to help set up, but she really just wanted to be at school with her teacher. All of the students had selected specifics jobs to celebrate the veterans coming for breakfast, and Mezi had volunteered to greet them as they entered. Mr. Wynes could tell that Mezi was uneasy and asked her about it. She said she was worried that some veterans might be uncomfortable with her hijab.

There were other students at her school who wore hijabs, and it was a normal part of the school culture, where students came from all over the world. Mr. Wynes even let the students invite veterans from their families who had served in countries other than America for our celebration. This day still made Mezi nervous, however, because they had also invited people from the community who were not part of the school. She didn’t know what they would think about her.

Mr. Wynes assured her that all would be well, and that he understood her concern. He also promised to stay with her while the veterans arrived for as long as she needed him. The first two guests arrived 30 minutes early in full uniform! Mezi rushed to unlock the door for them, and they apologized for being so early. They explained that they were nervous about getting lost and being late. “I was nervous this morning too,” Mezi admitted and they all smiled together.
