Description
Characterization is one of the most important things we teach in the secondary ELA classroom, so why not revisit some of your favorite, loved characters from the year around the holidays?
With this activity, students will receive a blank holiday stocking to color and design so that it serves as a symbolic representation of one of their favorite literary characters. As "cute" as this may be, there's plenty of analysis and writing to be done to enhance the rigor of this lesson. Students may simply color a stocking for you to add to the festive feel of your classroom OR you may take it to the next level with both brainstorming and analytical writing defending the colors, images, and other design concepts considered when creating the stocking.
*Note: This product may not be suitable for all classrooms. The stocking image is connected to the Christmas holiday, and this may create a sense of exclusion for some students. Use with discretion and a knowledge of what's best for your student population.
THIS PRODUCT INCLUDES
೦ A detailed lesson plan for the teacher
೦ A brainstorming sheet for students to think through images, color, dialogue, and other textual evidence that characterizes their focal character
೦ NINE different stocking designs for students to choose from
೦ An analytical writing prompt for students to complete that defends the artistic decisions they made while creating the stocking.
೦ A fully editable project rubric (must have Google account to access!)
Get into the holiday spirit AND practice symbolism, characterization, and imagery analysis all at once! This activity is great for those days leading up to break when students are the most crazed and distracted. Don't forget to take pictures and share your classroom with us on social media!
