What educators are saying

I used this as a review before the end of the unit test. Since it was at the end of the year, it was a great way to pump up the engagement and keep the kids focused on what we were learning. They worked in pairs and so stayed engaged much longer.

Description

Send your 4th graders on a "Measure Hunt" in this digital math breakout. Your students can race to solve clues and find the pirate treasure by converting from larger to smaller units of measurement within the same system, both metric and U.S. customary. Are your fourth graders up to the task? With no clues to hide and no printing required, this is a perfect distance learning activity or substitute assignment. This is a standards-based activity covering standards 4.MD.A.1 and 4.MD.A.2. Practice measurement conversion in an engaging, self-checking way! This activity can be completed by anybody with an internet connected device & browser. It is automated by a Google Form™, but Google™ accounts are not required.

Digital breakouts are a great way to review standards before testing. This online breakout also encourages students to collaborate and think outside the box. Students will need a device with internet access to complete this activity.

In order to solve the puzzles in this digital breakout, students must be able to:

  • Convert larger units of measurement to smaller units within the same system (kilometers to meters, hours to minutes, yards to inches, etc.)
  • Work with simple fractions and decimals when converting between units. Example 3.3 kilometers is how many meters? 2 ½ yards is how many feet?
  • Solve word problems involving the four operations involving converting measurement.
  • Estimate length, capacity, and mass by choosing the most appropriate unit to measure.

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Most students will be able to complete this activity in under 45 minutes. You can allow 60 minutes to be safe. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the puzzles very quickly (20-30 minutes), others will take longer.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.

Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36),...
Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
