Description

Civil Rights - Death of Emmett Till (Reading, Song Analysis, Assignment, etc.) - This 14 page Civil Rights teaching package centers on the death of Emmett Till in 1955 and the impact it had on the overall Civil Rights Movement. The package comes with a series of resources, including: a detailed and engaging reading on the life and death of Emmett Till, a set of analysis questions related to the reading, a song analysis and discussion guide for the Bob Dylan protest song The Death of Emmett Till, a writing assignment on the impact and legacy of the death of Emmett Till in regards to the overall Civil Rights Movement. The package includes all necessary rubrics, teacher keys and web links for additional research.

The one-page reading is detailed and centers on the events that led to the death of Emmett Till in 1955. As well, it detailed the trial and brief aftermath of the death of Emmett Till.

The analysis questions require students to think critically and focus on the issue of the Jim Crow Laws and the role they played in the death of Emmett Till. As well, the questions also highlight the injustice of the trial that resulted from the death of Emmett Till. The questions also include a short article on the legacy of the death of Emmett Till and the role it played in the overall Civil Rights Movement. Students can use the article to help them in their assessment of the lasting impact of the death of Emmett Till and the Civil Rights Movement.

The song analysis includes a set of discussion questions to the 1963 Bob Dylan protest song "The Death of Emmett Till". The resource includes a link to the lyrics and video of the song for use in the classroom and requires students to analyze the song for its message and connection to the history of the death of Emmett Till and the Civil Rights Movement. This is a great discussion activity that will help foster collaboration, critical thinking and analysis skills.
