Description
These Christmas poetry handwriting worksheets will provide a fun and meaningful way to practice cursive handwriting skills. Students who have learned how to form uppercase and lowercase cursive letters still need plenty of repetition to obtain proper form to solidify their handwriting skills. This resource contains 5 sheets featuring excerpts from poetry about Christmas. I have provided 3 versions: full color, grayscale, and blank space for independent drawing - all with traceable text on lined paper.
****Part of my Growing Bundle of Holiday Cursive Poetry Sheets****
Learning goals: practice cursive letter formation, learning sentence structure, strengthen fine motor skills, improve focus, build vocabulary, reading comprehension.
Points of interest:
- I have taken care to find color and grayscale images to accompany each excerpt that are interesting and engaging.
- The excerpts feature rhyme, descriptive language, and a variety of punctuation
Pre-requisite: These worksheets are best used with children who have had plenty of practice forming all the uppercase and lowercase cursive letters as well as practice joining letters into words. Ideally the child should be eager to practice writing sentences or stories. It is not necessary for the child to be able to read the poems, they can simply practice letter formation.
Ideas and tips for using these worksheets:
- Read the poem excerpts aloud with enthusiasm - demonstrate that poetry can be exciting and fun!
- Some children may enjoy repeating the text after hearing it. You can use the excerpts as a call and response game.
- These poems can still be used with emerging readers if you identify specific words they are capable of sounding out, sight words they may be working on, vocabulary, sentence structure, rhyme, grammar points, punctuation, and more.
- Some children will want to complete all 5 sheets, some may only have stamina for the first 2 lines. Always observe the child for fatigue or frustration and adjust as needed.
This resource can be utilized and/or extended in several different ways:
- Invite the child to write their own poem or add a line to a poem with the moveable alphabet
- Extend the work by asking if the child can think of rhyming words to a poem.
- Use the poems to converse with the child and ask open-ended questions for them to answer. For children who celebrate Christmas, you can ask, "What is your favorite thing about Christmas?" For children who do not celebrate, you can ask, "What did this poem make you think about? What was your favorite part of this poem?"
- The included bibliographical information can be a starting point for more research into poetry when used with older children.
