Description
By incorporating coloring and drawing into note-taking, students engage both sides of their brain, increasing their likelihood to remember what they learned. These lessons have students color-code their notes and review.
This bundle contains 21 lessons, review lessons and tests for all three units, PLUS three overall reviews and an overall test at the end: enough for 16 weeks of lessons!
These color notes are the fall semester’s grammar lessons for my sophomore English class. I use color notes to introduce or review basic terms and skills in grammar as bell-ringers on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This takes us no more than 5 minutes. If students want to color more, they can do that on their own time.
Each lesson contains:
• Blank color notes and practice sheet for students (2 per page)
• Larger blank color notes and practice sheet for students (1 per page)
• NEW! Google Slides student interactive slide
• Teacher copy with a blank copy on one half and a key on the other half
• Presentation slide with color note information for teaching purposes
Tests are editable Word documents, in a similar format as the color notes, and include a key.
Covered in these lessons:
UNIT 1:
• Parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, conjunction, interjection)
• Sentence structure (subject, predicate, direct object, indirect object, subject complement)
• Phrases (prepositional, participial, absolute, noun)
• Clauses (independent; dependent: subordinate, noun, relative, adverbial)
• Sentence types (simple, compound, complex, compound-complex)
UNIT 2:
• Commas
• Semi-colons
• Colons
• Em dashes
UNIT 3:
• Dangling and misplaced modifiers
• Avoiding wordiness
• Passive and active voice
• Maintaining parallelism
• Avoiding clichés
The notes are half-page size, and I hand them out to students to tape into their class journal that organizes all class notes and bell ringers. Be sure to print without the “fit to page” or “shrink to page size” option to keep it as large as possible. I have also included a larger version that fits one per page for students who may need more space to write. It is still skinny, so it would still likely fit if it were to be taped in a notebook.
When I filled the color note out myself, I used crayon and it worked just fine, but colored pencils work best and even highlighters for coloring would be good.
