What educators are saying

This was such a fun activity for my kindergarteners. They loved doing this activity after we read the story together. It helped them practice retelling each part.
This resource was perfect to go after I have already read the book. The students love how they were able to move the paper on there own. Perfect for my Pre-K class.

Description

“Brown Bear Brown Bear” by Bill Martin, is one of my all-time favorite books, and perfect for practicing the “sequencing and retelling a story” standards.

With that in mind, I designed this quick, easy and fun Brown Bear “slider” craft activity, that will help your students retell the story in the proper order, in a different & interesting way.

There are several bear options. I’ve included a large, full-page pattern for teachers, as well as a smaller, 2-on-a-page pattern for your students.

I run the pattern off on brown construction paper and have my students cut out the bear, but you could also print on white card stock, and have PK kiddos simply color the bear picture.

Children color the story characters on the “slider strip” according to the colors in the book, then cut and glue it together.

I pre-cut the dashed slits on the bear using an Exacto knife, so that children can easily insert their “storytelling strip”.

As they pull on the end of the “slider” the various pictures go through the bear’s “tummy window”, so that children can take turns retelling the story to a partner or reading buddy, then take Brown Bear home to share with their family, once again practicing these standards.

Storytelling sliders are also an easy and interesting way to assess reading comprehension, especially with little ones.

I’ve also included a writing prompt worksheet of “Here’s What Happened…”

in both a color and a black and white version, as another way to check comprehension, plus practice sequential writing. (Hopefully students will be using a variety of ordinal numbers or other transitions.)

Teacher Comments:

  • "Loved this project. Very useful for targeting Why questions, vocabulary, colors, and fine motor skills."
  • "This was such a hit with my students with special needs! You made sequencing fun and accessible for them. A++ job on this!"
  • "My preschoolers loved doing this craft and basically being able to take home a story they could "read" on their own."

I introduce the lesson by reading Brown Bear Brown Bear, then share my completed "slider craftivity” with my students.

So that you can quickly, and easily make an example, I’ve included a full-color pattern for the sequencing story strips.

After I read the story, we retell the tale together, using the picture prompts on my slider.

Teacher Comment:

  • "My students absolutely loved making these! I laminated 2 of the bigger versions to put in my classroom library and 2 months later they are still a favorite among the kids!"
  • "This was a great activity that did not require a lot of set up for my kids! It was quick and easy."

I’m Diane from Teach With Me, hoping your students enjoy story sliders as much as mine do.
