Students will discover borax crystal formation with a memorable hands-on lab and STEAM activity. Great for teaching the scientific method, measuring mass, and graphing. This bundle contains all 3-grade level versions. Students will explore how different types of water affect crystal formation. Students will use their knowledge in a STEAM craft to create crystal Christmas ornaments, snowflakes, or a design of choice.

The 2nd/3rd-grade version includes word boxes and more guidance. 2nd/3rd graders test 3 different types of water and only perform one trial. The 4th/5th-grade investigation tests different types of water, but students perform two trials. The 6th/7th/8th-grade version expands to an if, then, because hypothesis, four types of water are tested, and three trials are conducted. You can purchase them individually or the bundle for a discount. This is great for the Science Lab and STEM teacher with multiple grade levels. We also use it to differentiate for students' abilities.

Storybook Connection: Before performing the STEAM craft, read "Snowflake Bentley" by Jacqueline Briggs Martin and illustrated by Mary Azarian. This may motivate and give students ideas for snowflake shapes for their crystals. (Purchase the book separately or get it at the library.)
Supplies: Borax Powder, Tap Water, Distilled Water, Mineral Water, Popsicle Sticks, Pipe Cleaners, Heat Resistant Glass Jars (Mason, Beakers, etc.), Spoons, Measuring Spoons, and Measuring Cups. All supplies can be found at the grocery store.
