What educators are saying
We discussed how quilts were used to give messages during the Civil War era. They enjoyed learning about the different patterns and meanings.
I had never seen this resource before and I'm glad I found it. My students really enjoyed doing this.
Description
This product, The Secret of the Slavery Freedom Quilts, is a coloring and journal activity book. There are pages of quilt squares used on freedom quilts as part of the Underground Railroad. Students will be intrigued because the symbols on the quilts were secret codes; the "secrets" are revealed as the symbols are explained also. At the bottom of each page are blank handwriting lines that students can write what the symbols stand for, their personal thoughts or whatever you'd like them to reflect on. They will have fun coloring the quilt squares that could also be used for a Freedom Quilt bulletin board. The cover has an introduction to what the theme of the book is and the importance of the codes. The last page of the activity book is a blank quilt square for students to make their own quilt symbol. This will be an excellent multicultural addition to your Black History Month Unit for February and your students will be excited to know the Secrets of the Slavery Freedom Quilts!
