Description
Your students will be talking about this fermentation lab for years to come! Not really "barf", but the mixture of cereal, yeast, and water sure looks like it when the sandwich bag bursts open! This quick and easy lesson is perfect for life science or biology students learning about cellular respiration or fermentation.
Please Note: This lab is also part of my Full-Year Biology Curriculum and the Biology Unit 4: Cellular Energy!
This inquiry lab involves very little preparation. Because the fermentation process takes 1/2 to 1 hour, it is best to set up the lab, let it run for most of the class, then watch the bags POP as the carbon dioxide builds! *This lab is not as messy as it sounds. The bags do not explode, but they will pop and dribble fermented cereal on your lab table.*
Groups use different types of cereal then compare results as a class. This would also make a great introduction to variables, data tables, and graphing for a scientific method unit.
You will not be disappointed by this unique and memorable lab!
