What educators are saying

My students LOVED this assignment! It was so fun to see what creatures they came up with while learning about animal adaptations. This will become an assignment that I do every year.
The kids loved this! It was also a great extension activity after reading our Scholastic News and Science Spin articles. Fun library lesson.

Description

Make researching animal adaptations fun and engaging with this interdisciplinary project! This creative research project will have your students researching, writing, drawing, and creating all in one amazing digital display! This is something that I created to help students focus their research efforts on animal adaptations and record it in a clear, concise, and attractive manner, as well as practice their digital literacy skills.

What you will find in this resource are five lesson plans to help you teach how various animals adapt to survive in the wild. Those lessons include all of the templates and Google Slides links you will need to help your students create this project. This project may be completed with pencil and paper, digitally, or with a combination of both. Students will read about different types of animal adaptations, then research how several animals use those adaptations. If using Google Slides, the students will use the technological skills they are learning in class (creating text boxes, researching on the internet and with resource materials, adding images, typing, changing fonts/sizes, etc.) to build a digital research report that will display their knowledge of the various ways animals adapt to survive. All the pieces the students will need are here for you. There is a 4-point grading rubric at the end of this file to help you assess the work as well!

Included in this resource:

  • 5 full step-by-step lesson plans
  • print (black and white) and digital (full color) versions of all student materials needed for the lessons
  • reading comprehension passage with questions
  • animal research graphic organizers
  • informational writing graphic organizer
  • full color digital templates for completed project
  • grading rubric
  • examples of final project to share with students

This classroom tested project may be kept in a digital format OR it can be printed. The pages can be stapled together to create a hardcopy of the students digital work, creating a flip book. Once the project is completed, you will have a project fit for display on a bulletin board! The students will be able to showcase several curricular areas in this one project.

Prep is easy and painless. Everything you need for a winning interdisciplinary project is here! This mini-unit is a great way to hit many different standards across the curriculum AND have a wonderful display of student work. A grading rubric (on a 4 point scale) is included to help you assess the final products your students create.

What others are saying...

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Teach Engine says, "This went along perfectly with our 3rd grade Benchmark unit for ELA which talked about animal adaptations. I used it with one of the students in my special education class and he LOVED it! He usually does not like writing but he was eager to work on this, and was so excited to show off his finished product to classmates, staff, and his family."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Kristen Banter says, "I absolutely love this resource! So fun and and a great way to have students demonstrate their understanding of animal structures and adaptations while including creative writing. I know I will be using it year after year!"

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Elise L. says, "By far one of the most engaging, user friendly resource to use with my 3rd graders when we studied our adaptations unit in science. I loved including the writing portion in this resource and made it easy for me to use with some of my lower ability learners. Very creative."
