Activboard Smartboard Flipchart Using Addition & Subtraction

By the time they finish this Promethean ActivInspire flipchart, your students will "get" adding and subtracting with regrouping! I've just finished using it with my 3rd grade ESOL students, and not only did they have fun with it, but they actually understand why we regroup. Before, they could tell me to carry the one or cross out the five and make it a four, but they never knew why. Now, they can clearly explain the reason for regrouping!

Topic 3-1 Using Addition

-Students use singles, 10 packs, and 100 packs of "Pirate Punch" to add with regrouping. The concept of regrouping becomes clear when students see real world examples of making a ten and making a hundred by putting bottles together to make the fewest packs possible.

-Word problems using bar diagrams and a practice page using drag-a-copy numbers.

Topic 3-2 Adding Greater Numbers

-"Magically" reveal how to add greater numbers, beginning in the ones place.

-Mini-video of a problem being solved, so your students can watch the process while you work with other students.

-Instructions on how to play a card game to practice 5 digit addition.

Topic 3-3 Adding 3 or More Numbers

-"Magically" reveal strategies to add 3 numbers at one time.

-Students use a random number selector to create 3 numbers to add together.

Topic 3-4 Subtracting 4 Digit Numbers

-Again, uses the concept of singles, ten packs, and hundred packs to illustrate subtraction with regrouping, this time selling "Pirate Punch" at Pirate Petey's Pic and Go.

Topic 3-5 Subtracting Greater Numbers

-Word problems using bar diagrams, students drag the numbers to the appropriate places.

-"Magically" reveal how to subtract from left to right.

-Practice page with drag-a-copy numbers.

Topic 3-6 Subtracting Across Zeros

-Students are presented with a problem in which a group of customers want to by 73 bottles of Pirate Punch, but there are only 2 hundred packs available. The flipchart walks them through the process of regrouping step by step through an interactive demonstration.

Topic 3-7 Adding and Subtracting

-Review with simple fact families.

-Uses virtual manipulatives to show students why adding to check subtraction works.

-Word problems with bar diagrams.

-Practice pages in which the answer is revealed under the "Magic Magnifying Glass".

Topic 3-8 Problem Solving: Draw a Picture and Write a Number Sentence.

-Word problems with step by step instructions to help students understand what they need to answer, what they need to find, and how they need to solve the problem.
