What educators are saying

My student LOVED this. They asked me if we could do more activites like this one. I thought it was a good jumping off point to futher discuss social stratification.
My students were very engaged in this activity. It really got them talking (and arguing in a healthy way) about what they wanted and why. This was good to use as team building but also to talk about healthy communication with others.

Description

Included in this folder are the character Sheets, teacher Guide, and class slides needed to carry out this social stratification game! A student favorite.

This game charges groups of 8 to decide which 5 of them will gain a spot on the lifeboat as the boat sinks. Each character has very general information about the others, but more information about themselves. Most student groups opt to save the characters depicted as having more wealth, creating a great conversation of the pervasiveness of social stratification-- even in "life or death" situations. Additionally, students reflect on what information they chose to share with the group, and what that says about the value that society places on various identities and/or qualities. It is also a great exercise in group decision processes!

Most of all, students tend to really enjoy the activity and it works great for breaking up content.
