Grab this organized list of signal words that students can use to target the reasoning process identified by their essay (Compare and Contrast. Continuity and Change, Cause and Effect).
Especially at the beginning of the year, my students STRUGGLE to both find and utilize words that strongly convey their argument. I firmly believe in scaffolding the writing process to help them find success and be motivated to continue to improve.
Thus, I provide them with this list of signal words to help them as they write. Eventually they feel confident in their development as a writer and do not feel the need to access the list as we progress through the year.
Another way that I have used the list is during peer editing. I have students highlight when these words show up in their classmates' essays. This allows for writers to see where they could continue to incorporate signal/transition words to clarify and strengthen their argument.
