Description
Teaching students about communities of the world? Before teaching students about other countries, it is important to help students understand the basic vocabulary, concepts of their own country. Students also need to have a starting place and something to refer back to as they learn about other countries and cultures.
Students will be engaged in learning as they study the following topics:
1. KWL and picture walk of the USA.
2. Geography of the USA and Google Earth Activity.
3. Communities of the USA (including urban, rural, suburban)
4. Culture of the USA and Craftivity.
5. Landmarks of the USA STEAM Activity.
6. Symbols of the USA Craftivity.
7. The government of the USA Craftivity.
Each of the lessons includes an article, as well as a comprehension by color activity where students use color to help them understand the passage. There is an activity that goes along with each activity. Some lessons will take 1 day and others will take 2 days, so you can expect this entire unit to take about two weeks.
There is also a "Where I Live Flipbook" included to help students visualize their place on Earth!
Again, this is a great way to help students understand new vocabulary before beginning studies of other countries. It is also a way to help students compare other country's aspects to that of their own country.
