Description

Keep kids engaged in learning during your Valentine's Day party with this exciting digital escape room based on fourth grade math standards. Students will race to return the heart-shaped candies by comparing fractions, solving multi-step word problems, finding factors, and much more. This worksheet alternative is a great way to review 4th grade math skills all while students have fun and work together!

This is a Boom Cards™ activity and is fully automated; there are no clues to hide or answers to check! If you are looking for a way to keep students engaged in an educational activity on Valentine's Day, then this digital escape room should do the trick! The activity is easy to implement and encourages cooperative learning. Most of the cards in the deck contain the option for students to listen to the clues as well as read them. One of the puzzles also directs students to a "hint" card if they answer incorrectly the first time around.

To use Boom Cards, you must be connected to the Internet. Boom Cards play on modern browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge). Apps are available for modern Android, iPads, iPhones, and Kindle Fires. For security and privacy, adults must have a Boom Learning account to use and assign Boom Cards. You will be able to assign the Boom Cards you are buying with “Fast Pins,” (a form of play that gives instant feedback to students for self-grading Boom Cards). For assignment options that report student progress back to you, you will need to purchase a premium account. If you are new to Boom Learning, you will be offered a free trial of our premium account. Skills required to complete the challenges:

  • Compare the value of fractions using visual models or strategies such as finding common numerators or denominators
  • Divide a four digit number by a single digit number using an area model or other strategies
  • Multiply a two-digit number by another two digit number using an area model or other strategies
  • Multiply a four-digit number by a single digit number using an area model or place value multiplication strategies
  • Solve multi-step word problems involving multiplicative comparisons
  • Form equivalent fractions with the use of visual models or by finding equivalent numerators and denominators (a optional page is included in the pdf with fraction bars)

FAQ

  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge quickly (20-30 minutes), but most will take longer. The majority of students will take between 35-55 minutes.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided on the Boom Cards™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
  • Can this be used for distance learning? Absolutely! Boom Cards are a perfect tool for remote learning or face-to-face school.
  • Can this activity be completed individually? Yes! While we recommend having students work in small groups, this activity can also be done by students individually.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.
Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison.
Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
