Description

Get ready for your class ready for their Valentine's Day party with this exciting online breakout based on 3rd grade math standards! When the Valentine's Villain steals all of the heart-shaped candies, your class can use their knowledge of third grade math content to save the day! This digital escape room focuses on several third grade standards. This is a Boom Cards™ activity and is fully automated; there are no clues to hide or answers to check! If you are looking for a way to keep students engaged in an educational activity on Valentine's Day, then this digital escape room should do the trick! The activity is easy to implement and encourages cooperative learning.

To use Boom Cards, you must be connected to the Internet. Boom Cards play on modern browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge). Apps are available for modern Android, iPads, iPhones, and Kindle Fires. For security and privacy, adults must have a Boom Learning account to use and assign Boom Cards. You will be able to assign the Boom Cards you are buying with “Fast Pins,” (a form of play that gives instant feedback to students for self-grading Boom Cards). For assignment options that report student progress back to you, you will need to purchase a premium account. If you are new to Boom Learning, you will be offered a free trial of our premium account. Read here for details: http://bit.ly/BoomTrial.

Most of the cards in this Boom deck include audio which reads the clues aloud. Some of the puzzles also go to "hint" pages if a student answers incorrectly the first time. The cards will require students to drag and drop items, type in answers, and choose multiple choice answers.

The preview file will provide you with a good overview of the skills required to complete the challenges in this activity. Here is a general list of the tasks and skills required for this online breakout.

FAQ

  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge quickly (20-30 minutes), but most will take longer. The majority of students will take between 35-55 minutes.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided on the Boom Cards™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
  • Can this be used for distance learning? Absolutely! Boom Cards are a perfect tool for remote learning or face-to-face school.

Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range 10–90 (e.g., 9 × 80, 5 × 60) using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.
Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
