What educators are saying

My students love these escape rooms! They love working together to solve the problems and I love the way it helps them develop teamwork and persistence. Great resource!
My students had an absolute blast using this resources to review all the concepts of fractions. Some questions were a little more difficult so my students did work in groups of 3. Each student was engaged and participated the entire time to try to create the potion!

Description

Practicing and reviewing third grade fraction standards is fun and engaging with this digital escape room activity hosted on Boom Learning℠. Students find themselves locked in the potion-maker's lab and must finish brewing a love potion in order to escape. Your class will be racing to line up fraction beakers on a number line, balance scales by creating equivalent fractions, compare fractions with the same numerator and denominator and much more. This escape room is fun to use any time of year for either virtual learning or in-person instruction. The love potion theme also makes this the perfect Valentine's Day party activity to keep kids engaged in standards-based learning with the distractions of a holiday.

Skills needed to complete this breakout:

  • Find the fraction of a group from a word problem with a visual representation -Organize fractions on a number line
  • Compare two fractions with the same numerator using <,>, or = symbols
  • Compare two fractions with the same denominator using <,>, or = symbols
  • Create basic equivalent fractions (visual models are included)
  • Determine if a fraction is greater than or less than 1/2 by drawing number lines or using visual models
  • Unscramble words (hints provided)

These Boom Cards™ contain audio reading of the clues. The escape room is completely self-checking and guided by the Boom Deck™. Many teachers have students show their work on paper and explain their thought processes for solving the problems after they have successfully escaped.

Understand a fraction 1/𝘣 as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into 𝘣 equal parts; understand a fraction 𝘢/𝑏 as the quantity formed by 𝘢 parts of size 1/𝘣.
Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a number line diagram.
Represent a fraction 1/𝘣 on a number line diagram by defining the interval from 0 to 1 as the whole and partitioning it into 𝘣 equal parts. Recognize that each part has size 1/𝘣 and that the endpoint of the part based at 0 locates the number 1/𝘣 on the number line.
Represent a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 on a number line diagram by marking off 𝘢 lengths 1/𝘣 from 0. Recognize that the resulting interval has size 𝘢/𝘣 and that its endpoint locates the number 𝘢/𝘣 on the number line.
Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size.
