3 Reads Math Strategy for Word Problems

The 3 reads is a strategy used to help students solve math tasks or problems with a complete understanding of what is being asked. This product contains a visual reference to the strategy with a template for your students to use while completing a math task.

Read #1: What is the task about?

• During this read, the students identify what the task or problem is about. This includes basic information.

Read #2: What quantities are in this task? What is being counted? What is the relationship between the quantities?

• During this read, the students will identify the quantities/what is being counted and their relationship.

Read #3: What are we being challenged to answer? What strategies can we use?

• During this read, the students brainstorm the possible questions the task is wanting to us to answer along with possible strategies.
