Description
This 2nd grade reading comprehension bundle contains three complete resources that support grade 2 ELA standards. These activities can be used during instruction and for independent practice and centers
Includes:
- Main Idea & Supporting Details Reading Passage Worksheets
- Cause & Effect Reading Centers, Posters, & Worksheet
- Reading Strategies Posters
MAIN IDEA:
This set of no-prep activities is designed to give second graders plenty of practice discriminating between the main idea and the supporting details.
There are 8 sets of worksheets in this pack:
- The first page of each set features a short informational passage. Students will read the passage and then use the text to answer comprehension questions.
- The second page is a cut-and-paste graphic organizer. Students cut out four statements from the text and glue them onto the graphic organizer to show which is the main idea and which are the supporting details.
- Each set also includes answer keys.
In most of the passages, the main idea is explicitly stated. However, in several it is implied. There are plenty of details in the text to help readers determine the main point.
While these activities are designed to help teach main idea, some of the comprehension questions include practice with other reading skills as well including:
- sequencing
- cause and effect
- making inferences
- using context to determine meaning
CAUSE AND EFFECT:
This resource includes posters, activities, and assessment:
- Posters (2 sizes) - Illustrate the difference between cause and effect and provide visual support.
- Matching Game - Students determine which cards are causes, which are effects, and then put them together (or use them in a concentration-style game). Some of the cards have similar "story lines" so students will have to decide which pairs make the most sense. Includes 40 cards.
- Graphic Organizer - Shows how cause and effect are related. Can be used along with the card matching activity for extra support. Students can place the cards in the boxes on the graphic organizer to help them check their work and see if their matches make sense.
- Worksheet/Assessment - Students match each cause with its effect. The second part requires two short written responses.
