"Coming of Age" Song Analysis Activity
Students will select from a variety of pre-selected songs geared toward the "Coming of Age" and "Value of Work" unit. With a partner, they will explore and analyze the lyrics to find theme, symbols, figurative language, and more. Then, they will create an album cover representing their analysis. This lesson will take 1 hour, however, it can be extended into another day (included with directions). This fun, no prep activity to have students do after reading The Great Gatsby will be a class favorite! This packet includes a song analysis of "Sharks" by Imagine Dragons and an explanatory paragraph of how the song fits Nick Carraway, an eight-sentence paragraph model for students to use, and lyrics from some popular songs for students to choose to analyze any other character from The Great Gatsby.
