Description
Students will love creating their own custom logo design by graphing linear equations, finding the slope of a line on the coordinate plane, locating the y-intercept, and writing their equations in slope-intercept form.
You will love the flexibility of this student driven project. Rigor is high but student engagement is even higher!
The purpose of the iLogo Slope Activity Project is to give students an opportunity to use slope in an artistic endeavor that has real-world applications. Every company around the globe has a logo that symbolizes their brand. Logos need not be elaborate, but they must be recognizable, and unique to the brand they represent. Students will use linear equations to create a logo that is wholly original, containing at least eight straight lines of different slopes. Students will construct a graph of their logo marking coordinates, calculate the slope of the required eight lines writing the equations in slope-intercept form, produce a full color drawing of the logo that is ready for publishing, write a short paragraph explaining the story of their logo, and compile their project for presentation.
You do the prep… students do the work. You will enjoy getting them ready and setting them free to investigate.
Students love being creative while showing off their individuality, in a collaborative atmosphere of experimentation. They will enjoy replicating a real-world application for linear equations while sharing a little about themselves and getting to know their classmates.
Identifying the slope of items, inside and outside the classroom, will become second nature as students learn through inquiry. Inquiry-based learning leads to greater retention. It’s a win-win!
Students will:
- Create a wholly original logo.
- Construct a graph of the logo using a coordinate plane.
- Calculate the slope of each of the eight required lines.
- Create equations in slope intercept form to represent the eight required lines.
- Use positive slopes, negative slopes, zero slope and undefined slope.
- Produce a full color, publisher ready copy of their logo.
- Write a paragraph explaining how their logo represents them.
- Present each facet of their project on a poster.
This project is suited for students in advanced 7th grade math through Algebra 2. It can also be completed independently if you have a student who has a planned absence. The iLogo Slope Mastery Task makes a great review of Algebra 1 skills for students beginning Algebra 2. This lesson also makes excellent sub plans if it is completed at the conclusion of the unit or as review. Begin your year with some fun! This project takes approximately three hours to complete.
Focus on Skills:
- Graphing linear equations with an increasing slope
- Graphing linear equations with a decreasing slope
- Graphing linear equations with a zero slope
- Graphing linear equations with an undefined slope
- Plotting points on the coordinate plane
- Calculating the slope of a line on the coordinate plane
- Writing equations using the slope-intercept form
- Finding the slope and y-intercept in y = mx + b

What other teachers like about the I-Logo Slope Mastery Task…
"My students complain about finding the slope of lines. "Why do we have to learn this stuff?" iLogo Slope Mastery gave them real-world reasons to learn how to find the slope of lines. Thank you." Karen K. – 10th grade
"My students and I love this resource. Not only did I use this with my algebra kids, I used this with my advisory students who were doing a venture creation project. My algebra students were able to use as an assessment rather than an activity and they loved the PBL cycle and feedback loop. My advisory students were able to use this to create a logo for a business they were creating. Fortunately for us we have a high school right next door with a graphic design program and they were actually able to bring the designs to life using the students projects!" Joseph C. – 8th Grade Primarily students with learning difficulties, and that are emerging bilinguals/ ELs/ ESOLs/ ENLs
"I really enjoyed doing the project my with students. They were able to find the slopes of many different lines and construct the slope-intercept form of each line. I also was able to get to know my students a little more through their logo's. I will use this every year!" Ashley P – 8th grade
"Students were able to explore slope in ways a worksheet wouldn't let them. This project allowed students to merge design and math and see how it relates in the real world. It also allowed students to communicate their ideas through writing." Debbie F.
"My students loved this! My honors 7th graders enjoyed using their creative sides along with math. We learned new things about each student during this as well." Stacy P – 7th grade (honors math)
