What educators are saying

This is such an easy way to get students writing. Many students get stuck and don't know where to start, so these pictures give them a great starting point. I am able to give sentence starters to my lower students and/or word prompts, while others can create stories all on their own.
This is such an amazing resource! My students can be as creative as they want as they write their own silly story with these picture writing prompts. I can use these picture writing prompts for ELA, ELD, and writing centers! So many different ways to use them! Excellent resource!

Description

You are purchasing over 70 writing prompts for the primary classroom. These are not your ordinary prompts! Students will be prompted to write using pictures that are already on the page!

The pictures are random so students have fun making up a story about what they see on the page. They also add details to their pictures to match their stories. My students love these random writings. They like to see who can come up with the most creative story!

Introducing this activity to your class:

When I introduce it, I model how to write one in front of the class. I brain storm ideas for my writing and make mine very weird and crazy! Right away the kids pick up on the idea that this writing is fun. I make sure to add lots of details around the drawings so that the kids can see how creative they can get.

Tip:

I suggest collecting these each week and binding them into a book at the end of the year. Students are very proud of their final books that they get to take home. Parents love these keepsakes!

When to use them:

  • I love to use these during center time. Once I introduce this activity, my students know exactly what to do and I don’t ever have to reteach it again. This means I have more time with my small group instead of having to explain how to complete this center. Just print and you’re done!
  • Use them with reluctant writers. These are especially good for the kids that just don’t know what to write about. It helps them when there is something already there to build an idea upon.
  • Sub activities: Copy a set for your class and your sub will have a ready to go writing activity.
  • You can also use these as early finishers and fun time fillers!
