Writing Projects - 2nd and 3rd grade - Classwork / Homework

Do you need writing topics for each month for 2nd/ 3rd graders? Use these writing research projects to help students develop their writing skills. There are topics for informational writing as well as for narrative writing and opinion writing. These projects can be used for classwork or homework. Each project includes planning pages, rubrics and scaffolded graphic organizers.

These are great projects for 2nd and 3rd graders to practice brainstorming, drafting and completing a final draft. There are multiple topics to choose from to research and then write about. These topics include animals, bugs, ocean animals, sports, planets, thanksgiving and kindness. There are also projects to help students write an opinion paragraph that could be used a speech. A demonstration speech project is also included.

Each project covers important language arts skills in a fun way. These projects are no-prep for teachers. Students will have opportunities to write narrative stories based on research they do on a theme. They can use the facts they learn to describe the characters in their story. You'll also have an opportunity to talk about fiction vs non-fiction and about text structure. Some projects have students create a poem about their topic as well.

These projects could be as monthly practice or you could use them in writing workshop to allow you the time to teach specific skills. The graphic organizers are scaffolded so they would work for students who need support with the writing process as well. These could be used by a special ed teacher to support students who need more basic writing opportunities.
