What educators are saying

I found this material very helpful for my writing lessons. It helped me to have the key aspects of writing in a well-organised way and handy. Thank you!
My daughter is loving this resource! We are working through it slowly but it has been a standout for her this term!

Description

This set of writing mini-lessons reviews 26 essential elements of the writing process. Lessons are organized in an alphabetical format. Each letter of the alphabet highlights an important writing element.

Each lesson includes notes, examples, and a writing prompt. First, students will learn about the writing element. Then, students will review an example to review and reinforce the writing element. Finally, students will put their learning into practice as they respond to engaging writing prompts. These mini-lessons are extremely versatile and designed to complement any writing instruction.

Great news! This resource includes 3 versions of the mini-lessons. That means that you can easily DIFFERENTIATE learning for your students. Just choose the note style that works best for your students or classroom setting.

  • Guided Notes – Students complete notes
  • Filled-In Notes – Students review notes
  • Blank Notes – Students fill in all the notes

About the writing mini-lessons:

The lessons are fun and effective for a variety of reasons:

  • Mini-lessons are chunked in a manageable format so students are not overwhelmed as they learn.
  • Targeted lessons help students focus solely on one specific skill.
  • Diverse lessons keep students’ interest high.
  • The mini-lessons provide practical skills that students can use to immediately improve their writing.
  • Creative prompts help students find joy in the writing process.
  • Opportunities to share writing responses builds a community of writers.
  • Differentiation is easy with the various note styles provided.

Options:

These writing lessons are designed to be quick and easy. Students can complete the A-Z elements in a variety of ways.

  • BOOKLET – Students create a booklet of the elements. Then, they respond to the prompts on the back of each booklet page.

  • WRITING JOURNAL – Students glue each mini-lesson into a journal and respond to the prompts directly on the journal pages.

IDEAS:

These writing prompts can be incorporated into instruction in a variety of ways!

  • TEACH in ORDER or in ANY ORDER --- Lessons can be taught sequentially in alphabetical order, or students can complete different lessons as they relate to units they are studying.

  • LEARNING STATIONS --- Use these writing mini-lessons as one or many learning stations that students rotate through in class.

  • INSPIRATION --- Challenge students to review their writing responses and develop one of them into a longer, more developed writing piece.

  • WARM-UP --- Use the writing lessons as a warm-up activity for English Language Arts instruction.

  • SUBSTITUTE LESSON PLAN --- Since lessons are self-contained, they work great as a lesson for a substitute teacher.
