What educators are saying
Description
This resource contains five winter-themed learning centers for students to rotate through in small groups. Each learning center (or station) is designed to give students engaging and exciting learning experiences to practice, enrich, reteach, and enhance their learning. Students will visit each center with a small group and complete tasks and assignments. Students will create an interactive flip book to showcase their learning. In addition, they’ll “build” a snowman while their progress through the stations. Students will be able to add an element to their snowman after completing each reading comprehension task. Working both independently and with their small groups, students will have multiple opportunities to develop their reading comprehension skills and learn about the winter season.
In this set of Reading Comprehension Skills Centers students will practice the following reading skills:
- Cause and Effect
- Summarizing
- Context Clues
- Point of View
- Finding the Main Idea
These centers are extremely versatile. They can be taught during a single class period, spread out over consecutive days, or taught at different times throughout the winter season. They’re perfect right before holiday breaks, too!
The centers are completely turn-key and include everything:
- Center Implementation Guide (4 pages)
- Center Table Labels (5)
- Teacher Resources - Detailed Center Overview and Set-Up Guides (5)
- Student Flip Book Handouts (where students record their work from each center – 6 pages)
- Snowman Shape Handout (where students will be “building” their snowman as they work)
- Center Materials (includes student directions - with extension activities and any resource students will need to complete the activity)
- Grade Sheet (to track and grade student work)
- Keys (for all center activities)
Winter Centers Overview:

Center 3: Finding the Main Idea
At this center students will respond to nine task cards focused on finding the main idea. They’ll take turns reading the cards and completing the tasks.
Center 4: Point of View
Students will read a set of paired passages about a winter vacation. Then, they’ll work together to determine the author’s point of view in each passage.
Center 5: Summarizing
