What educators are saying

This tool was especially helpful for those of my students who will be participating in summer work program. Being able to see an actual check stub was rewarding for most of them. Alot of kids have never seen a check stub before. Great resource.
I really loved this resource for my students. It has helped enhance their understanding more than I could've imagined.

    Description

This lesson and activity bundle uses realistic pay stubs to teach students how to understand their paychecks. Topics include gross vs. net pay, deductions, income taxes, benefits, and more.

This bundle includes a lesson complete with Google Slides, guided notes, and a practice worksheet, plus a scavenger hunt activity in both digital and paper versions! Lesson, practice, and scavenger hunt will take two to three 50-minute class periods.

    Resources Included:

Understanding Your Pay Stub Lesson: Includes Google Slides, guided notes, and a practice worksheet! Students will learn how to read and interpret the information provided on their pay stubs using realistic sample pay stubs. You will lead students through the guided notes using the included Google Slides. Students will learn about each part of a pay stub, including related vocabulary, as they fill in the blanks on the notes. Students will then practice their knowledge independently or in pairs on a practice worksheet.

Your students will be shocked by how much money is withheld from each paycheck, which leads to great conversations about the purpose of each type of tax found on the pay stub!

Pay Stub Scavenger Hunt DIGITAL & PAPER: Includes 16 questions requiring students to read and interpret pay stubs! Students are provided two realistic sample pay stubs to use as they answer the questions. Topics include locating specific information on a pay stub, deductions, calculating percentages of income withheld for taxes, comparing income between two pay stubs, gross vs. net income, and year-to-date vs current income.

    • Paper Version: Hang the question cards around the room. Students can start on any card. After they believe they have answered their first question, they will look around the room for their answer on the top of another card. This becomes their second question. Students will continue until they have answered all 16 questions and their last question leads them back to the question where they started.
    • Digital Version: The DIGITAL Scavenger Hunt uses Google Forms. Similar to the paper class scavenger hunt where students search around the classroom for their answer that will lead them to the next question - students' answers will lead them to the next question on the Google Form. Students will not need to move around the room for this activity, so it is distance learning and social distancing friendly.

**You will need a Google Account with access to Google Slides to use this resource. The Google Slides included in this lesson are not editable. **
