WORD CHOICE WORKSHEETS
When our middle/high school students are struggling with writing, the best place to start is to go back to basics: WORD CHOICE. These 22 worksheets cover a whole variety of topics: denotation & connotation; understanding tautology; the effect of word choice on tone; formal and informal word choice; colloquialisms, slang & jargon; and more! All come with detailed answer keys.
SENTENCE FLUENCY
Once our students are experts with words, we need to zoom out to examine the sentence structure: types, length, fragments, beginnings, and more. This resource comes with multiple slideshows, handouts and practice worksheets.
PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE
Then we zoom out even further to the paragraph. Looking at how to effectively structure a single paragraph in an essay. These resources teach the PEEL method for structuring a paragraph (Point, Explain, Evidence & Link) and come with a slideshow, handout, worksheets, and classroom poster.
EMBEDDING QUOTATIONS
Learning how to embed quotations is an important process to teach students, as most ELA curricula stresses the importance of students’ ability to analyze texts (both literary and non-fiction), and then respond to them, citing textual evidence when doing so. These resources (slideshow, handouts and worksheets) aim to teach this skill effectively.
FORMAL & INFORMAL WRITING STYLE
It is vital that students understand formal and informal writing styles. Too often, students do not fully understand the subtle differences in register and as a result, their essays are often too colloquial or casual. Hopefully with these resources, your students will be able to effectively manipulate the writing style depending on the context.
REGISTER: Genre, Audience, Purpose & Style
Before any writing task, students should know and understand what they are planning to write, why they are writing it, to/for whom they are writing it, and the style they should be using. These resources will help students understand the correct register for the piece, and will result in more structured, focused writing.
PARAGRAPH WRITING PRACTICE TASK CARDS
Once they have mastered the individual aspects of writing, students are going to need practice! These task cards prompt them to write stunning (and manageable) paragraphs, with tips and instructions to guide them.
