What educators are saying

I am teaching the Socratic Method to my 5th-8th grade ELA classes and they have enjoyed these resources. I have also found it helpful.
I used this to help support my literature circle discussions and it was really helpful in keeping students accountable and engaged in their discussions.

    Description

Do your students struggle with participating in group discussions? Underperform in Socratic Seminars? Students who over-share their opinions but rarely ask questions? Others who are nervous and hesitant to jump in and get involved? These resources aim to help with just that, because learning to engage in meaningful discussions is one of the most valuable lessons we teach in the ELA classroom.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

Students will be able to confidently engage in meaningful discussions with others. They will be able to formulate and ask their own open-ended questions to prompt discussion, demonstrate active listening strategies, draw in others, and contribute their thoughts and opinions.

    CONTENTS

Asking Effective Questions: Tools for Discussions: Slideshow, posters, and handouts to help students formulate and ask probing, critical, analytical questions when they engage in conversations.

Teaching Active Listening Skills: Slideshow, posters, and handouts to help students identify and explain active listening skills. Moreover, these materials will help students model these active listening skills, and communicate more effectively.

Learning How to Contribute to Discussions: Slideshow, posters, and handouts to help students confidently contribute to group discussions, moving the conversation forward, inviting dialogue, and provoking thought.

Discussion Skills - Challenge Task Cards: These 27 game-style challenge cards can be handed out to students before any class discussion, and give them clear, attainable goals to work towards. We often assume that students know how to effectively engage in discussions, yet in reality we need to give them the tools to gain proficiency in this area. These cards do just that!

Discussion Skills Pennant Banners: 28 Triangular banners in 2 sizes (1/2 letter page, and full page) to hang in your classroom and remind students of the ways they can contribute during class discussions.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Christine S. said: "I used this prior to introducing socratic seminars in my 8th grade classroom. I can say without hesitation that it enhanced the quality of our conversations. I loved both the content and the design of the products in this bundle"

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sarah D. said: "As a middle school science teacher I am finding myself increasingly trying to weave group discussion, metacognitive and a variety of executive functioning skills into the classroom, so I am constantly looking for good strategies that will engage the students and help them to grasp the importance of these skills using science as the medium. This resource has definitely provided the scaffold I need to help us as a class to achieve these goals."
