What educators are saying

Really enjoyed this one. A great addition to my Social Studies curriculum. Charming illustrations and overall very well done. A+
My kids really enjoyed this unit. The materials were well organized and thoughtfully put together. It made teaching much easier to have so much of the work laid out for me and ready to go. Recommended.

    Description

Through this Long Ago and Today Social Studies unit, students learn how their lives relate to people and events long ago. Students compare and contrast life long ago to life today. Text pages include information about school long ago. The engaging activities also foster a strong home and school connection.

The Then and Now unit includes

    • Vocabulary cards in two formats (BUNDLE ONLY)
    • An in-depth reading passage with fact sorting, comprehension questions, and QR codes
    • Mini-book that supports the article and compare and contrast artifacts.
    • Compare and contrast artifacts long ago & today: sort, interactive notebook component, and scaffolded compare and contrast pages
    • Family Tree & Grandparent (or older relative) interview: includes comparing students' lives to their grandparents' lives.
    • Timeline: students choose important events in their own lives.

The parent letters come with both English and Spanish translations.

The writing activities are scaffolded in three ways:

    (1) Blank spaces to complete the sentence frames

    (2) Short, blank lines for students to write two or more sentences

    (3) A large section of blank lines for students to write a paragraph

The writing activities with "Artifacts Long Ago & Now" prepare students for the "Grandparent Interview" writing activity by providing similar sentence frames for compare and contrast.

Most of the pages have both a primary and intermediate line option, except the Family Tree and Grandparent Interview.

See the preview for more information and photos of the product.

The unit is geared toward second grade and aligned with California Social Studies Standards, but can be used in other grades/states as needed.
