Teaching Fluency with Poetry

I created this pack to provide teachers with ideas and materials for EXPLCIT fluency instruction. There are many strategies and passages for fluency practice that are widely available, but there seems to be very little for direct instruction. All the poems were carefully selected from the public domain.

This pack includes 20 weeks of fluency instruction with eight different focuses to improve oral reading fluency. Each week follows a specific pattern of instruction. On day one the teacher introduces the focus and models it with a poem. On day two students echo read to practice the fluency concept with the model. On day three the students will choral read the poem. On day four students discuss the poem with comprehension questions.

The focuses of the lessons are:
• How commas affect fluency (2 lessons)
• How periods affect fluency (2 lessons)
• How question marks affect fluency (3 lessons)
• How exclamation points affect fluency (2 lessons)
• How other punctuation marks affect fluency (3 lessons)
• How dialogue affects fluency (2 lessons)
• How to read more smoothly with phrasing (2 lessons)
• How a variety of texts can affect the voice (2 lessons)

For every week’s lesson there is an “I Can Statement” and an anchor chart. The lessons are also included as a clickable power point so the teacher can project the lesson on a Smart Board or Promethean Board. Please note that the slides are locked and are NOT editable. This is to protect the clip artists work and terms of use.

A half sheet version and full sheet version of each poem is included for students to add to a poetry journal. Students can draw what they visualize when reading the poem. This is a possible idea for day five, which is not included in the lesson plans.

Seven additional poems are included for fluency practice as well. Students can apply the previous lessons to read these poems more fluently.
