Description
If you are looking for a team-building activity to keep your students engaged during the last few days (or week) leading up to Thanksgiving, then THE GREAT THANKSGIVING ESCAPE is for you! There are five Thanksgiving-themed (trivia) challenges included in this file. This resource is also not content specific, so you can virtually use it in any class where you may want your students to have a bit of fun before this holiday. Did you know? This escape-style activity is double the fun because you can also use this at your next Thanksgiving Day gathering with your friends and family! Don't limit the excitement of these challenges to your classroom!
Do we have to complete ALL of the challenges? No, you can mix- and-match the challenges, as each puzzle is independent of the other. As the teacher, you can decide which puzzles you may want to use and in which order they will be completed. Several detailed and thorough teacher instruction pages have been included, which provide differentiated instructions and suggestions for the various challenges. Answer keys have also been provided for ALL of the challenges!
Group size: 3-5 students (Note: This can be completed as an individual and/or pair activity)
Time: Approximately 30 minutes per challenge (Provide hints along the way if time is a factor!)
Materials: Aside from the materials that you would already have in your classroom (pencils, pens, scissors and colored pencils or crayons), no additional supplies are needed! These escape room-style games were created as a print-and-go resource.
HOW to use this with your students: (several, flexible options)
• One activity a day, for the # of activities used
• As a complete activity (over several, continuous class periods)
WHEN to use this with your students:
• As bonus work for students who finish their work early
• As a homework activity to promote critical thinking skills
• As a class reward for positive behavior/work ethic
THE TASK:
GOBBLE, GOBBLE! You may have heard of the pardon of a turkey by the president, but have you ever had the opportunity to pardon a turkey of your own? Well, this is your chance! Save a turkey from being the center of a Thanksgiving dinner by completing the following Thanksgiving-themed escape room challenges. If successful, you will save a turkey from being an upcoming family meal this holiday season!
Challenge #1: The Thanksgiving Table
In order to successfully complete this challenge, you will have to race to answer a bunch of trivia questions about random Thanksgiving facts. Then, set out the traditional dishes by coloring the food items located on the table according to the task card directions.
Challenge #2: Thanksgiving Shopping List
In order to successfully complete this challenge, you will have to sharpen your pencil (and eyes!) and pay attention to the letters within the maze to identify various items on the Thanksgiving Day shopping list. Along your way, you will collect letters, which will spell out appetizers, entrees, and desserts. In addition, you will have to search to find other groceries on your list, including a hidden Thanksgiving Day dish.
Challenge #3: History of Thanksgiving
Work together to complete the photographs of the Thanksgiving Day puzzles. When finished, unscramble the letters found in the puzzle pieces to complete the historic Thanksgiving Day facts. There are two versions of this history-related activity included. One that reflects facts for American and Canadian Thanksgiving. You have the option to do either activity or both!
Challenge #4: Thanksgiving Humor
Using the cryptogram codes provided, you will work together to decode some Thanksgiving Day jokes in three separate activities. Then, you will attempt to unscramble all of the shaded letter boxes from the answers, which will provide you with the missing letters to a few secret Thanksgiving Day recipes.
Challenge #5: Dinner Etiquette
Do you know your manners? In order to successfully complete this challenge, you will have to be able to correctly identify the various table etiquette tips. Be careful though! If you incorrectly answer any of the questions, you may burn the turkey and ruin dinner! Once you figure out the missing item, and as a final challenge in this activity, you will have to correctly set the table for dinner! Now, this will impress everyone! Bon appétit!
*Upon completion of the challenges, three themed ("The Great Thanksgiving Escape") editable certificates have been included, so you can easily type in a name and date and give each student who participated something for their efforts! In addition, a post-challenge reflection has also been included!*
