Description

Surface area concepts are more engaging with this colorful note-taking format.

What is a math doodle wheel? A math doodle wheel is a type of graphic organizer where students can:

  • Take notes inside the math wheel
  • Use color, drawing, and doodling to help create memory triggers
  • Complete practice problems in the pattern around the wheel, and
  • Color the background pattern

Students can keep these graphic organizers in their interactive notebooks all year as a resource/study tool.

  • The wheels are excellent for reviewing concepts as part of your test prep.
  • You can even enlarge the math wheels and use them as posters or anchor charts!

The sections of the wheel include formulas to find the surface area of four different figures:

1) Rectangular prisms

2) Cubes

3) Square pyramids

4) Triangular prisms

This surface area resource includes:

  • Student math wheel
  • Teacher key/wheel with completed notes and examples
  • Colored sample of wheel
  • A PowerPoint file that has a blank wheel with background, so you can add text to make your own math wheels, if you’d like (for classroom use only - not commercial use).

Features of this easy-to-use resource:

  • Notes sections with nets and examples (notes are just suggestions, and you can alter them or add to them)
    • I find it helpful to have students write the areas on the different faces and color the congruent faces with the same color; this helps students understand where the parts of the formulas come from/what they represent.
  • Guided practice or individual practice: dimensions of 8 different figures in the pattern around the circle, for students to practice finding surface area
  • Coloring/doodling opportunity: students can color the background pattern, as well as the headings and doodle arrows
