What educators are saying

My students enjoy this resource. I like the notetaking portion and the added practice so that my students have a chance to practice using the skill with a gradual release of responsibility.
My students often have difficulties summarizing what they've read, but this resource gave them the information and practice they needed.

Description

Teaching students how to summarize can be a daunting task. Often, it’s one of the hardest reading strategies for students to grasp. That’s where this mini-unit comes in. Filled with summarizing reading passages, worksheets, and graphic organizers, this unit is a great way to teach students how to summarize a text.

This summarizing unit is also included in this Reading Comprehension Skills - 3 Mini-Units Bundle which includes Compare & Contrast, Summarizing, and Point of View mini-units.

This 3-day summarizing mini-unit encourages modeling, hands-on activities, and lots of summarizing practice. Through creative activities like a 6-word summary, 60-second fairy tale sketches, and sum it up illustrations students become actively involved in their learning. Students learn how to take larger selections of text and reduce them to their key ideas through direct instruction and ample opportunities to practice the skill of summarizing with 6 original passages. This mini-unit not only engages students in their learning, but also helps them truly develop this critical reading comprehension skill.

Great News! The student packet is also available as a Google Slides resource for students. In addition to the PDF version, students can complete the packet pages via a file sharing service such as Google Drive, Google Classroom, or in the internet “cloud.” The digital version of the packet is accessible from any computer and allows students to complete their work online.

* FYI: The anticipatory set activities that accompany each lesson are NOT in a digital format. They will still need to be printed for students due to the hands-on and interactive nature of the activities.
