Description
This fun STEM activities allows students to investigate the relationship between sound waves and amplitude and wavelength. The activity allows the students to build a straw “oboe” that vibrates to produce sound waves. Students manipulate their “oboes” to change the pitch/frequency and the amplitude of the waves their instruments produce.
The activity is similar to my sound waves CER and expands on it making it more open ended and student centered.
This activity is a great introduction to waves and is a classroom favorite as it give students a chance to play around while learn. This activity can be used at many different grade levels - from upper elementary through middle school. I did this with my 8th graders as an introduction to waves and I heard so much laughter in my class as all the students really got into it.
Aligned to support NGSS Standard:
4-PS4-1.Develop a model of waves to describe patterns in terms of amplitude and wavelength and that waves can cause objects to move.
MS-PS4-1. Use mathematical representations to describe a simple model for waves that includes how the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave.
