What educators are saying

Fun activity that the kids enjoyed and were engaged with the entire time. This is a great resource.
This is an amazing resource! It helped my students better understand the material we covered in class and kept them engaged. Thanks!

Description

Engage students in a fun mystery-solving math activity with simplifying radicals! In this activity, you will simplify square roots to decipher clues and solve the case.

Students will simplify each radical to its simplest form. Then they will look at the word bank on the right of the page to find their answer. Students will write the word that is associated with their correct answer on the answer blank.

When they have finished all 17 questions and filled in all the blanks, students should read the clues. These are four clues which will help them discover each person’s passion as well as the state each person is from. They will use these clues to solve the logic puzzle at the bottom of the page. Though the logic puzzle at the bottom of the page is simple, this may be a new concept or game for your students. If so, the logic puzzle portion could be completed in small groups, as a class or even offered as extra credit for those ambitious enough to try it.

Choose how you would like to use this activity in your class:

  • As a Scavenger Hunt – great to get the students moving
  • As an Independent Activity – perfect for independent learning, small groups, or absentees
  • Or as a Digital Activity – ready for distance learning

Your download includes:

  • Scavenger Hunt Student worksheet
  • Clue cards in FULL COLOR and in B&W
  • An Independent Activity
  • A Digital Activity
  • Answer key

In all versions, the activity contains 17 expressions -- enough to give students meaningful practice, but not so many as to exasperate them!
