Do you find that teaching this skill requires more hands-on visual supports? This series aims to provide the SLP or small group teacher with visual supports to help your students develop their ability to provide similarities and differences with greater independence.

✅The research suggests: Seeing similarities and differences is a fundamental cognitive process (Gentner & Markman; Medin, Goldstone & Markman). Strategies that engage students in comparative thinking had the greatest effect on student achievement (Marzano, Pickering & Pollock).
⭐This ANIMALS set includes farm animals, zoo animals, ocean animals, woodland animals and common pets. Each animal category includes 6 animals, provided in pairs with interactive pieces for student placement within a Venn diagram. 2 differences for each animal and 2 collective similarities are included. The describing features are meant to be relatively obvious for the students, as the goal is the skill of verbalizing similarities and differences independently. There is also a page for creating different pairings among the animals in each category. Please note: When comparing animals that aren’t the original pairings, describing features were not necessarily included to fit these pairings. The SLP or small group teacher may need to help with selection and/or create additional images/visuals.
✂️Suggested Prep: Print page 7, laminate and cut into strips to use as visual cues for verbalizing similarities and differences after completing a hands-on Venn diagram. Print pages 8-27. Laminate each page. Place Velcro (smooth stays put) on each dot. Cut the bottom strip of describing features into pieces and place Velcro (rough side) on the back of each. Place these interactive pieces in the squares for student use when manipulating pieces into the Venn diagram. Once each page is prepped, you can punch 3-ring holes in each page and store in a binder. Print and laminate pages 28-32. Cut each card and use animal flashcards for more visual support or for a higher level similarities and differences activity (without interactive components).
