Description

This service learning plan will match young readers with senior citizens, helping young people increase their fluency while helping build a sense of community and reduce the feeling of isolation. This Reading Buddies programs is great for home school students, as a whole class or as an elective project.

This project reflects core values: Service, Fellowship, Diversity, Integrity and Leadership. This service project exemplifies service in the area Basic education and literacy, while also addresses issues of conflict prevention/ resolution, and community development.

Reading Buddies Project

This program will match elders-- many who are isolated in their homes due to the coronavirus pandemic-- with school age children. It will promote wellness for the elders by giving them a purpose and providing some cognitive stimulation, of listening to new topics.

Elders can benefit the youth with not only reading but also relationships, as the youth will have the opportunity to develop greater social emotional learning through interacting across the generations. These rich experiences have the potential to cultivate compassion for differences, illness and aging.
