What educators are saying

This activity helped keep my students active while we were watching "The Man in the Red Bandana" on YouTube. The reflecting on the quotes also helped them open their eyes on what happened on 9/11.

Description

The product revolves around the 14-minute mini-documentary featured by ESPN on "The Man in the Red Bandana," Welles Crowther, a hero who saved at least 12 lives on 9/11 while risking his own. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S77KYbkmjwc

This resource includes a short background on 9/11, a reflection space for students, a quote response section, and a focus on symbolism of the red bandana. At the end of the lesson, students will find their own quote that can represent the power of the human spirit in difficult times.

Perfect for an upper middle school ELA class or high school ELA class, this lesson helps students recognize the good in people, even in awful times.

*Note: The documentary is not graphic at all, but it is sad when discussing the loss of a family member. If a student may have recently lost a family member, maybe consider an alternate assignment or use the picture book, "The Man in the Red Bandanna" by Honor Crowther Fagan, as an accompaniment to the work in this lesson.
