Scams Research Project and Digital Worksheets for Consumer Protection

Teach high school students how to be educated consumers with this choice-based scams research project. This product promotes personalized learning by giving students the option of which type of fraud to research and to choose between writing an article or creating an infographic. This product also includes digital and print worksheets for students to research several scams and a brief reflection prompt. With this product students will identify various scams, explain warning signs related to the scam, and describe strategies to prevent scams.

Note to teacher:

This folder includes a Print Scams Research Worksheets with Scams Listed and Print Scams Research Worksheets without Scams Listed so that you can select your own scams or use the scams provided. The scams listed in the Digital Scams Research Worksheets are editable for you to customize before sharing with your students. The Scams Research Worksheets do NOT include an answer key because answers will vary based on which scams are researched and which sources are used.

The Google Slides™ digital worksheets do NOT allow you to edit each slide individually. You may edit the scams listed, but the worksheet appears as the background of the slide and text boxes have been added for students to type in their research. The Teacher Guide is one PDF that includes notes for the teacher, Scam Type Project Ideas, Scams Research Project Instructions, Scams Research Project Grading Rubric. The Print Scams Research Worksheets are in separate PDFs.

Daily Objectives:

• Explain various scams consumers should be aware of.
• Identify the warning signs of a scam.
• Describe strategies to prevent scams.

Ways to use this product:

1. Assign or allow students to pick one scam type. Students will follow the project instructions to complete the assignment. A grading rubric is provided to assess student work. Students will submit their digital project.

2. Same as #1, but have students present or share their project with the class. This could be done orally, electronically, or as a gallery walk. The other students will take notes in the Scams Research Worksheets based on their classmates’ projects.

3. Students research each of the scams on their own or with a group to complete the print or digital Scams Research Worksheets.

4. Students research one of the scams on the worksheet. Students will then share their findings with the class. As they share, the other students will take notes in the Scams Research Worksheets based on their classmates’ findings.
