    -Gamers STEM / Beginning of the Year STEM Challenges

    The STEM Challenges include:

    1. Pinball Machine Challenge! Students must design a Pinball machine that contains the following properly-functioning parts: flippers, drain, holes, bumpers, and plunger. For extending learning, students can decide to incorporate a spring in the design of their plunger. Students must be able to successfully launch the ball using the plunger. They must have a certain number of obstacles such as bumpers an holes that award points to the player. The flippers must be able to function in preventing the ball from reaching the drain. (More directions are found in the resource)

    2. Code a Video Game Challenge! first) Students will work together to plan and design a game with characters, obstacles, and commands. The game must have an objective with a starting point and a finishing point. It is up to the group how detailed they would like their game to be. Once the board is put together, students will split into their two groups – the players and the programmers. The programmers will be in charge of developing the game – placing the obstacles, characters, and writing down the commands in the exact order that will allow the players to win the game. It is up to the programmers how difficult they want their game to be. (More directions are found in the resource)

    3. Foosball Table Challenge! Students must construct a functioning foosball table that has at least 12 players (6 per player) and 6 rods. (3 per player) Students must be able to push, pull, and turn the rods properly to move the players. The players must be secure enough to not fall off and hit the ball properly. There must be two opposing goals that the ball can be knocked into by the players. (More directions are found in the resource)

    -October / Halloween STEM Challenges

    1. Eyeball Catapult (two types featured, one is extended learning) Students design a contraption that can launch an "eyeball" (ping pong ball).

    2. Candy Corn Scale (Students construct a scale that effectively balances equal weights and then they must make predictions about various Halloween items and test them)

    3. Shoe-box Haunted House Students plan and construct a spooky (or silly) haunted house using a shoe-box! The rooms must have specific themes or purposes in their haunted house.

    4. Bridge of Bones Students build a bridge ONLY using glue and Q Tips! How much weight can their bridge support after the glue has dried?

    -November / Thanksgiving STEM Challenges

    The STEM Challenges include:

    1. Turkey Coding Using a list of supplies, students will first create a turkey craft. On the turkey feathers of the craft, students must decide on made-up symbols that represent letters of the alphabet. They must create an answer key of their symbols that correlate with the letters A-Z. Their turkey craft will have a coded message. The message must be a fact about turkeys... (more instructions are found in the resource!)

    2. Cornucopia Catch

    Students must construct 5 paper cornucopias along with paper fruits and vegetables. The cornucopias must be strong enough to hold, catch, and toss the paper vegetables. Students must come up with their own unique game with instructions, rules, and challenges using the cornucopias... (more instructions are in the resource)

    3. Thanksgiving Table Students must construct a Thanksgiving table only using toothpicks and glue. The table cannot have more than 4 legs. The challenge is to make the table as strong as possible. The table must be at least.... (more instructions found in the resource)

    -Winter / Christmas / Holiday STEM Challenges

    The STEM Challenges include:

    1. Geometric Gingerbread House Challenge Using a list of supplies, STEM groups must create a geometric gingerbread house for their gingerbread family. Using guides found in the resource, students must invent a gingerbread family to build their house for.

    A floor plan must created with the following requirements:

    -There must be 2 polygon shapes present and labeled in their floor plan ... (more instructions are found in the resource!)

    2. DIY Snow Globe Challenge

    Create a snow globe using the ingredients and supplies listed in the resource. Your STEM group must come up with the perfect combination of ingredients to make the glittery snow fall at a slow rate. Bonus points for creativity and design inside the snow globe! Students have 3 days to complete this challenge. The first two days should focus on design and gluing down the pieces... (more instructions are in the resource)

    3. Santa's Marble Run Chimney Challenge Construct a chimney marble run where Santa and his presents can slide down and into the house! The marble must rest at the top of the chimney and successfully slide down the chimney (not free fall – do not break the presents!) and into the home. The STEM group must time how long the marble travels. The longer the marble...(more instructions found in the resource)

    -February / Valentine’s Day STEM Challenges

    The STEM Challenges include:

    1. Cupid's Flapping Wings STEM groups must create wings that are able to extend and close properly, creating a flapping motion. The wings must contain a pulling mechanism that allows the wings to close. When the mechanism is released, the wings must open. (more instructions in the resource)

    2. Pinwheel of Hearts STEM groups of 3-4 students must create a Valentine’s Day Pinwheel. The group that can create a paper pinwheel that spins the fastest wins the challenge! At least 8 hearts need to be incorporated in the design. (more instructions in the resource)

    3. Valentine's Day Mailbox STEM groups of 3-4 students must design a Valentine’s Day Mailbox. The mailbox must be large and sturdy enough to hold all of the group’s Valentine’s Day cards. It must be able to open and close easily with a flap and a tab. There must be a movable flag to show it contains cards. (more instructions in the resource)

    2018- Year of the Dog

    The STEM Challenges include:

    1. Dog Agility Course - Students must create a model of an agility course designed for dogs. They must first brainstorm obstacles in the course and design a course map. Using a terminology guide, students' design must contain a pause table, weave flags, hurdles, tunnels, a dog walk, a teeter board, and more!

    2. Dog Treat Dispenser - STEM groups must create a dog treat dispenser only using a list of supplies. There must be a “trap door” mechanism in the design that releases the treat. (more information in the resource)

    3. Marshmallow Dog - STEM groups must research and choose a dog breed. With their dog breed, they must create a marshmallow model. Their model must display distinguishing physical characteristics of their chosen breed, such as the size and shape of their tail, ears, nose, legs, (etc.) in their design. (more information in the resource)

    -March / St. Patrick’s Day STEM Challenges

    The STEM Challenges include:

    1. Leprechaun Trap Using Simple Machines STEM groups must design a leprechaun trap using simple machines. The groups must decide on a simple machine using an information guide (included in the resource) and incorporate it into their design. They must create a trap for a leprechaun who is 2½ inches tall and 1 inch wide. If they test their trap and it does not work properly, they have two more attempts to fix their design. (more instructions in the resource)

    2. Rainbow Run Using a list of supplies, STEM groups must design a Rainbow Run that showcases both kinetic and potential energy at use. The design must have a single large curve, in the shape of a rainbow. Students are not required to use all of the items listed below, but they are not allowed to add items to the list. (more instructions in the resource)

    3. Floating Pots of Gold Using a list of supplies, STEM groups must create a floating pot of gold that is designed to carry as much gold (pennies) as possible! STEM students should discuss and predict which materials and strategies would help their device carry the most gold while staying afloat. Groups only have three attempts to test their pot of gold. They may have to redesign their pot if it fails (breaks apart). ....(more instructions in the resource)

    -End of the Year STEM Challenges

    The STEM Challenges include:

    1. Mini Golf Course (Hole in One) Challenge! Students must design a Mini Golf (one hole) that can be successfully completed in one stroke (a hole in one!). They must also craft a putter. Certain types of angles and obstacles in the course are required in their design.

    2. Balloon Rocket Car Challenge! Students must design a bottle rocket or car that is propelled only by the air escaping from a balloon.

    3. Trampoline Challenge! Students must construct a trampoline that can bounce an object (such as a marble) after being dropped from 12 inches (1 ft) high. They must measure the height of the bounce and build the contraption that creates the highest bounce.

    -Summer STEM Challenges

    The STEM Challenges include:

    1. Floating Noodle Castle Challenge! Using a list of supplies, students must design a floating castle with noodles and toothpicks. Four to five students are assigned per group. Each group is given noodle rings that are cut ½ inch wide. Students should be easily able to cut the rings into smaller pieces if needed.The castle must stay connected at all times in the water. Students have one hour to complete this challenge.

    2. Water Balloon Catapult Challenge! Students must design a catapult or slingshot that propels a water balloon into the air. The group that can propel the water balloon the farthest wins the challenge. Students have three attempts to create their best catapult. ***More challenge directions are found in the resource

    3. Slip-n-Slide Challenge Students must construct a Slip-n-Slide that effectively accelerates an object through its course. The Slip-n-Slide can have turns, hills, and decorative features in its design. The object must be going fast enough to complete the slide but not too fast where it could cause injury to the rider. Three different objects must be tested – students can decide which objects they think will accelerate at the right speed. ***More challenge directions are found in the resource
