Description

Do you want to deliver maths lessons that are based on real-life, engaging material but also in a scaffolded, guided and strategic way that ensures students have enough direction to learn?

This project enables students to plan their dream road trip around any country - the US or elsewhere around the world. They only need access to a scaled map (provided for the US and Australia) and the internet (basic searches like Google to look up activities and hotel costs). If students don't have access to computers at your school, they could do this research as a home learning part of the task or could simply make up the activities/hotels and estimate their costs. Either way, it is a FANTASTIC way for students to practice addition, money/financial skills, location/mapping and life skills like holiday planning. Each task is scaffolded, with specific instructions, examples and space to show working out.

This is all within a fun and engaging project that caters for multiple abilities and requires no prep by you other than printing the booklets out. Everything (including checkpoints for students to meet with you and sign-off on the next part of their journey) has all been planned for you!

Additional teaching tips:
- ensure lower/struggling students use a simple scale, e.g. 1cm = 100km or use Google Maps as an alternative means of finding the distance and travel time between their destinations
- encourage lower students to round answers to make them easier to work with, e.g. a hotel that costs $98.95, just say $99 or $100 in their working out
- encourage extension/higher students, once finished, to then figure out the costs of their road trip if they brought along a buddy (or two)
- US teachers: skim through and spend an extra minute just changing all references to kilometres to miles if you wish
