    Resources Included in this News Report Bundle:

    1. News Article Summary Lesson - Summarizing a News Report

    This News Article Summary Lesson teaches students essential news literacy skills. Students are introduced to the Five Questions Model (W5-H), a reading comprehension strategy and writing framework that is applicable to any informational text.  This model provides students with a framework to interpret the structure of news articles.  Students will practice the skills covered in the slideshow lesson using the Sample News Article titled “Neurodivergent interns thriving at Calgary Aerospace company.

    2. Newspaper Article Headlines and Leads - Slideshow Lesson with News Report Examples

    This News Report Headlines and Leads Lesson explores how to read nonfiction text features. Students will practice the Five Questions Model (W5-H) and identify the headlines and leads in different news reports.  They will also develop their own headlines and leads using visual writing prompts. 

    3. News Article Graphic Organizer for Summarizing News Reports

    The News Article Graphic Organizer includes explanatory prompts for each section of the graphic organizer.  These prompts will support students with their independent reading and summarizing.  You can instruct students to locate and select a news report from a publication like Newsela or Teaching Kids the News.  Then, they can complete the graphic organizer independently.

    4. Writing a News Article - News Report Template and Rubric

    This lesson teaches students how to write a news report. Students will utilize the Five Questions Model (W5-H) as a writing framework for their own news articles.

    ​​The slideshow lesson clarifies what a news report should and should not include, encouraging students to consider language, audience, and tone.  Students will be guided through an example of the writing process; this example begins with a visual writing prompt and a corresponding news report graphic organizer that is used as the outline for writing a news article.  

    Students can use the News Report Writing Graphic Organizer and the News Report Template to help them along the writing process.

    A 4-Level Rubric for Writing Newspaper Articles has also been provided for assessment purposes.  This rubric is also provided in editable and ready-to-print formats to meet the unique needs of your classroom.

    5. Expository Text Bundle - News Articles and Reading Comprehension Questions

    Practice reading expository texts with these 3 news articles! Evaluate students’ understanding using reading comprehension questions in multiple choice and short-answer format.

    Each news report includes a 2-page article, along with 8 multiple choice questions to assess students’ literacy and reading comprehension.  The question stems for these multiple choice questions prompt students to summarize main ideas, summarize supporting paragraphs, identify synonyms, organize information, interpret the purpose of grammar and punctuation, and make inferences about the news report.

    Additionally, students will respond to one short-answer question that will prompt them to summarize the main idea of this news report

    To consolidate these reading comprehension questions, answer keys have also been provided.

    6. News Report Format “Trashketball” Review Game

    “Trashketball” is always a hit with students!  Have fun reviewing the key features of a news article using this slideshow game.

    There are 10 review questions in total.  These newspaper article format questions will quiz students’ understanding of the following concepts:

    • What W5H stands for and how it is used
    • The difference between headlines and leads
    • Features to include in a news report
    • Features not to include in a news report
    • The purpose of the lead, location, conclusion, etc.
